51,000 Iowa residents reported that they have used illegal drugs such as heroin in the past year, that is a 13,000 increase from the year prior.
Drug abuse in Iowa high schools tends to increase, as children get older. 1.8% of 9th graders are abusing drugs including heroin, but by the time they get into 12th grade that number jumps up 2.6%.
Effective treatment for heroin is vital for handling such a devastating addiction. Less Iowa citizens received treatment in 2008 for heroin addiction than the two years prior. According to NSDUH data, 47,000 Iowa residents claim they need but did not receive treatment for illegal drug use.
The Iowa prison system is feeling the affects of heroin abuse in their facilities. In both Iowa Community Corrections and Institutional Inmates 2008 saw the most inmates needing help for heroin abuse. 13,047 and 4,441 prisoners were addicted to heroin, respectively. |
