South Dakota Drug Rehab information for Heroin Addiction

According to the United States Drug Enforcement Administration, heroin is typically available only in personal use quantities in South Dakota.

The National Drug Intelligence Center also notes that the availability and abuse of heroin are limited in North Dakota. The BCI (Bureau of Criminal Investigation) reports very few heroin investigations. Law enforcement officials report that Mexican black tar heroin is the primary type available, although Mexican brown powdered heroin is occasionally available. Mexican criminal groups transport, distribute, and abuse most of the heroin available in North Dakota. However, in Fargo and Grand Forks these groups distribute heroin to Caucasian independent dealers who sell the drug at the retail level.

Although its availability is limited, Mexican black tar heroin is the most common type of heroin in North Dakota. Mexican brown powdered heroin also is available but in very limited amounts. Black tar heroin is available only in the larger urban areas of eastern North Dakota, such as Fargo and Grand Forks.

There are no indications of violence related directly to heroin distribution or abuse in North Dakota. Nonetheless, the highly addictive nature of heroin causes many abusers to resort to crime to obtain money to purchase the drug. Heroin abusers often commit theft and burglary in order to support their addiction.

In South Dakota, there are many attempts being made to meet the needs of drug addicts, but statistics show success rates to be dismally low. What is needed and wanted is a drug treatment which not only handles physical addiction, but finds the underlying reasons why a person turns to drugs in order to free the person forever. It is extremely therapeutic to be distanced from their former association with drug dealers, bars, the cabinet where the alcohol was kept, the cigar box where the cocaine was stored, etc. All these triggers make the task of sobriety seem insurmountable to the chronic drug or alcohol abuser as these triggers continuously stimulate a reminder of their past addictive behaviors.
